One of my aims in life is to overcome procrastination. I got to hear about the ‘two minute rule’.
Trust me, it’s life-changing.
The idea is simple: if a task can be done in two minutes or less, do it immediately. This rule is beneficial for quick tasks that often get postponed, such as responding to an email or tidying your desk.
To apply this hack to larger projects, break them down into the smallest possible actions.
For instance, if you need to write a report, your two-minute task could be opening your computer and creating a new document titled with the report’s name.
This micro-action is a psychological trick to bypass the resistance to starting. Once you’ve begun, it’s easier to continue.
This method works because it lowers the mental barrier to entry. The commitment of two minutes is minimal, reducing the dread (which I don’t really have to explain) of engaging in a task.
Frequently, once you start, the momentum carries you forward, and you’ll find yourself working past the initial two minutes.
Try it…now.
