I’m now at the stage in my business that I’m considering hiring a freelance writer.

I asked a friend who has created a six figure business how he managed to build with freelancers. His answer wasn’t particulalrly helpful. He’s defintely part of the ‘hire cheap, fire quick’ school.

That’s not me. I’m looking for a writer who can build a strong working pattern, one that endures ‘illnesses’, family events and time zone differences. So I looked into what another friend (who also has a six-figure business) told me was a great approach to hiring.

‘Define the Scope of Work, or it’ll run away from you’

Start by outlining the specific tasks you expect the freelance writer to perform, my friend said. This includes the type of content (e.g., blogs, white papers, newsletters), the subject matter, and any particular style or tone requirements. Be as specific as possible to avoid misunderstandings about what is expected.

‘Establish Deadlines and Deliverables’

Be rigid with deadlines. It’s my friend’s opinion that if the writer misses deadlines, you’ll miss clients.

Clearly state the deadlines for each piece of work. If the project is ongoing…
